The "Sukhareva Balka" landscape reserve. A natural monument and a tourist attraction
In 2013, with the aim of preserving the landscape and biological diversity in the Mezhova district of the Dnipropetrovsk region, the "Sukhareva Balka" landscape reserve was created.
The nature-protection zone of local significance lies beside the village of the same name and has an area of 614.3 hectares. The length of the protected ravine is about 14 kilometres from south to north-west, right up to the M-04 highway. In the lower part of the valley the bed of a small river widens several times to 50-150 metres, forming lakes 380 m, 460 m and 980 m long.
On the protected territory there occur representatives of the flora and fauna listed in the Red Book of the Dnipropetrovsk region and of Ukraine. Among the rare plants the researchers named fine-leaved yarrow, Sarmatian bellevalia, pale hyacinth, feather grass, Lessing feather grass, Podolian onion and buttercup anemone. The inhabitants of the wetlands include the European pond turtle, the lizard, the eastern steppe viper, the tree frog and the coal blue butterfly. Waterfowl have chosen the ponds and reed thickets for nesting and migration.
In a district where human activity is bound up with industry and agriculture, the appearance of a protected territory is of great importance. Maintaining a balance between the developed lands, such as arable fields and pastures, and those areas that are used to a lesser degree fosters in the population a careful attitude to nature, ecological stability and the tourist appeal of the region. The organisation of ecological trails, educational excursions and rural tourism is becoming ever more popular among travellers. The creation of the reserve makes it possible to preserve the habitats of rare birds and animals, to enlarge the range of endangered plants and to preserve the natural ecosystem. Access to the territory of the reserve is not restricted, but any activity that threatens the preservation of the natural monument is forbidden.
