Watchmaker's Day. Wall, Street and Tower Clocks of Ukraine

Our life is scheduled to the minute, and we constantly check the time by electronic, wrist and street clocks, and when we notice a fault in the clockwork we turn to the masters of time. Not everyone knows that on 3 November watchmakers celebrate their professional holiday together with jewellers, since specialists of these magical crafts are called masters of golden work, or masters with golden hands.

Monuments to T. H. Shevchenko Across Ukraine

From our school lessons we remember the dates tied to the life and work of Taras Hryhorovych Shevchenko. 1814 — 1861 — these are the 47 years of the life's journey of a great poet, playwright, artist and public figure, at the dawn of industrial development in Ukraine and of the peasant movement against serfdom. Shevchenko spent 24 years in serfdom and 10 years in exile. There is a number that grows year by year — the number of monuments and memorial markers raised in honour of the national poet.

The Calendar. Helper, Souvenir, Adornment, Heritage

Every year, in the moment when the last day of the departing year passes into the first day of the one to come, we open a new calendar that will keep us company for 365 days. By a calendar we mean a periodical reference publication in the form of a table or a journal, with a numbered reckoning of all the days, month by month.

Civil Protection Day. Fire Stations and Watchtowers

Workers of the fire-and-rescue service mark their professional holiday twice a year: 17 April is the Day of Fire Protection, and 17 September is Rescuer's Day. On these solemn days, congratulations are received by people ready to risk their lives in the struggle with the fiery element, by veterans of the fire service, and by the teachers and students of specialised colleges. Also on these days, commemorative events are held in honour of those who died in the line of duty. Excursions to the sites of fire stations and ascents of the observation towers have become a tradition of the celebrations. Let us too take a walk to a few of Ukraine's fire-and-rescue stations and get acquainted with their history.

27 March, Theatre Day. A Tour of Ukraine's Theatres

Theatre Day, founded by the International Theatre Institute under UNESCO, has been celebrated all over the world since 1961. On 27 March congratulations go to all who are involved in creating vivid spectacles in the temples of Melpomene — stage directors, artists, actors, costumiers, decorators, producers, cashiers, sound engineers, cloakroom attendants and all theatre-lovers, spectators and students of theatrical colleges. And although this holiday is considered professional, and the date is not marked in red in the calendars, for the workers of the stage this day is always a working one, and the spectator is the most welcome guest.

Cherkasy. The tourist potential and what to see in the city

Cherkasy is a regional city in the very centre of Ukraine, situated on the right bank of the Kremenchuk reservoir in the channel of the Dnipro. The settlement arose in the times of Kyivan Rus, when fortified settlements and defensive forts had to be built for protection against nomads. Neither the fortress nor other historical buildings have survived to our day, but in the youngest regional centre of Ukraine one can see many other landmarks, for which one or two days off are quite enough.
