Druzhkivka. Sketches on a Walk

Druzhkivka is part of the Kramatorsk agglomeration. It occupies an advantageous geographical position in the centre of the Donbas and is linked by a network of roads and railways to the largest industrial cities. What does one of the oldest cities of the Donetsk region, a giant of machine-building and metallurgy, look like today?

Drohobych. Touristic and Hospitable

During my first trip to Drohobych I was struck by the number of historical monuments, by the beauty and the special medieval atmosphere, and I noted with regret that this amazing Precarpathian city was little known to tourists. In the nearby resort towns of Truskavets and Morshyn the excursion guides do not even mention Drohobych. I never forgot the city in the Lviv region, and after some time an inner signpost led me back there again.

Seeing a live horse these days is difficult, but possible. Despite the fact that cars have driven horse-drawn transport off the city streets and agricultural labour has been mechanised, horses remain among the most faithful companions of humankind over six millennia and give people strength and inspiration. The beauty and endurance of these animals — which served humanity on the battlefield and at the plough, carried people over long distances and won tournaments — were valued in ancient Greece and the Roman Empire, where equestrian statues were erected in their honour. A touching and very fine sculptural depiction of a horse and a foal has been installed in the village of Dibrivka, Myrhorod district, on the grounds of the stud farm.

Rivne. A Help to Travellers

Rivne is a regional centre of Ukraine with a history of over 700 years. The first written mention of the city dates to 1283, but historians name another figure — the 11th century. During the Second World War the city suffered greatly, and few historical monuments remained in it, but new ones have been created that a tourist will find interesting to get acquainted with. In 1944, during the liberation of Rivne from the Nazis, the railway station was blown up by underground fighters. In 1952 a new station building was erected, and now its facade is adorned with the trident and the ancient coat of arms of the city. From here we will begin our acquaintance with the city.
