Bakhmut I. A railway station with a monument of industrial architecture

Bakhmut I station is a freight station of the Lyman division of the Donetsk Railway.

The station is located in the city of Bakhmut in the Donetsk region.

Formerly, Bakhmut I was the main station in this industrial centre of the Donbas, and suburban trains stopped at it. The primacy passed to the Bakhmut station, while the former Bakhmutka serves as a freight station for industrial purposes. The station has been in operation since 1878 and has 3 railway tracks and one platform.

The station is a terminus; to the nearest station, Stupky, also located in Bakhmut, the distance is 4 kilometres in a northerly direction.

In the southerly direction, railway dead-ends have been laid.

The station's distinctive feature, its architectural dominant and its contemporary, is the railway station building, on whose façade a commemorative plaque attests to the construction of the first station on the line that connected Bakhmut with the salt sales markets.

The building has the status of an industrial monument of architecture and differs from its brethren - kitted out with plastic and siding as a result of repairs - by its colour and design, traditional in railway construction.

The window casings, the cornice and the vertical projections on the reddish-brown walls are painted white, which lends the single-storey building volume and solemnity. At present the station building serves as a service building.

The public station toilet is executed in the same style as the station building.

Besides the station building and the toilet, the station has a warehouse and a small utility building.

In Soviet times the station shared its name with the city - Artemivsk; in 2016 both it and the city had their historical name restored.
