Lviv. The Greenhouse in Stryiskyi Park. An Exhibition Hall of Green Exotics and an Educational Tourist Spot

Winter gardens were very popular in the 18th–19th centuries, and in castles and villas wealthy owners would add halls with panoramic windows for growing exotic plants. In Lviv, besides the greenhouse complex in the botanical garden of the Ivan Franko University, another subtropical oasis has been created — it is located in Stryiskyi Park. Admission to the tropical flora exhibition is free.

 

The kingdom of palms, cacti, ficuses, cycads and other vivid overseas guests was established in 2016 in a renovated greenhouse that had stood empty since 2006. The botanical gardens of the University of Forestry and the Ivan Franko University shared their green collections, handing over seedlings of palms, agaves and ficuses. Other foreign specimens were purchased as well.

A tall date palm and a washingtonia rise in the centre of the display, while at the edges there are compositions of monstera, banana, pomegranate, fig, orange, lemon and melon trees.

 

Ivy, orchids, dracaenas, hibiscuses and succulents harmoniously complemented the emerald collection.

 

The conditions for keeping these wonders comply with all phytosanitary requirements. With the help of a water-dispenser system, the greenhouse's green inhabitants are periodically saturated with life-giving moisture. In the second hall an artificial fountain and a pond have been created, home to fish and turtles. Grateful visitors traditionally leave coins in the water to return once again to this little corner of paradise and to have their wishes come true.

 

The greenhouse serves not only as an exhibition hall — educational and awareness-raising sessions are held here.
