Theatre Day, founded by the International Theatre Institute under UNESCO, has been celebrated all over the world since 1961. On 27 March congratulations go to all who are involved in creating vivid spectacles in the temples of Melpomene — stage directors, artists, actors, costumiers, decorators, producers, cashiers, sound engineers, cloakroom attendants and all theatre-lovers, spectators and students of theatrical colleges. And although this holiday is considered professional, and the date is not marked in red in the calendars, for the workers of the stage this day is always a working one, and the spectator is the most welcome guest.

Let us make a lightning tour of some of Ukraine's theatres.
One of the oldest theatres in our country was founded in 1882 by the celebrated actor, playwright and director Marko Lukych Kropyvnytskyi. The building in which the theatrical luminary organised the first professional theatre was built in 1867. Since 1940 the creation of the theatrical figure has borne the name of its founder. After the reconstruction in 2012, the M. L. Kropyvnytskyi Kirovohrad Academic Ukrainian Music and Drama Theatre bestows the magical spirit of renewed beauty.

Dnipro — a city of ancient theatrical traditions, in which even in the difficult perestroika years the creative springs did not run dry and tours around Ukraine continued. The Dnipro Theatre of Drama and Comedy was founded in 1927 and is housed in the building of the former Winter Theatre, built in 1907.

In Donetsk the theatre of opera and ballet was founded in 1932. In 1941, before the Hitlerite occupation, the troupe moved into a new building and opened the season with Glinka's opera "Ivan Susanin". In the foyer, decorated with stucco and ornamental vases, busts of outstanding composers and playwrights are installed. The theatre bears the name of the Donetsk native Anatolii Borysovych Solovianenko, an opera singer, Hero of Ukraine, the son of a miner. In 2014 the doors of the Donetsk Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet did not close, despite the difficulties and the departure of many artists.

The Odesa National Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet is an inseparable part of the cultural life of Odesa, a favourite place of rest for Odesans and guests of the pearl by the sea.

Kyiv is literally stuffed with all sorts of theatres of various orientations. On the Andriivskyi Descent, beloved by tourists, the "Koleso" Theatre opened in a historic building in 1988. Its repertoire consists of works by Ukrainian and foreign authors. The peculiarity of the theatre is that the spectator is at arm's length from the theatrical sacrament and is, as it were, a participant in the performance.

In the repertoire of the M. V. Gogol Poltava Academic Regional Ukrainian Music and Drama Theatre are works predominantly by the native of the Poltava region, the outstanding mystifier and playwright Mykola Vasyliovych Gogol. The origins of the theatre in Poltava date to 1818. Its founder was the Poltavan, innovator of the Ukrainian language, I. P. Kotliarevskyi.

In Rivne the regional academic Ukrainian music and drama theatre opened its doors in the city centre in 1939. But it is not only on the large stage that an atmosphere of love and mysteries reigns. The inner courtyard has been converted into an auditorium for 256 spectators.

In Sumy the regional academic theatre of drama and musical comedy is named in honour of one of the founders of dramatic art, M. S. Shchepkin. For more than 80 seasons on the theatrical boards the basis of the repertoire has been made up of domestic and foreign plays. Since 1980 the theatre has been housed in specially built premises.

Several regional theatres are named in honour of Taras Hryhorovych Shevchenko. In Chernihiv the regional academic music and drama theatre was founded in the 1920s and is considered one of the oldest regional theatrical institutions. On its boards Honoured Artists of Ukraine and leading masters of the stage share their mastery.

The T. H. Shevchenko Ternopil Academic Regional Ukrainian Drama Theatre was founded in 1945. In 1957, in the fine city of Ternopil a new theatre with 596 spectator seats opened. On the stage of this temple of Melpomene, festivals, benefit performances and theatrical gatherings popular in Ukraine are held.

In Cherkasy the academic regional Ukrainian music and drama theatre also bears the name of the national poet. Founded in 1932, the theatre occupies premises from 1965. In 2015, as a result of a fire, the auditorium burned out completely. The actors delight spectators with their art on the city's other stage venues, while the region's main stage is in need of restoration.

Not every regional city has a puppet theatre. The Cherkasy Regional Puppet Theatre is located in the city centre in the former forester's mansion, which has the status of an architectural monument and is over 150 years old.

In Chernivtsi the academic regional music and drama theatre bears the name of the Bukovynian writer Olha Kobylianska, whose monument stands on Theatre Square. The theatrical institution was founded in 1940 and occupies a beautiful building decorated with stucco and sculptures.

The Mykolaiv Academic Artistic Russian Drama Theatre was founded in 1922 and over its history has nurtured a galaxy of talented actors. Despite its respectable age, the theatre is considered one of the youngest, given the youthful composition of its troupe. The theatre is housed in the historic centre of Mykolaiv, and in the summer period a public garden serves as its stage venue.

In Zhytomyr the theatrical roots reach into the 18th century with the emergence of the first permanent theatre. The Zhytomyr Regional Music and Drama Theatre bears the name of the most brilliant Ukrainian playwright, Ivan Antonovych Kocherha, and is housed in a building constructed in 1966.

On the historic pedestrian Mykhailivska Street stands the Zhytomyr Regional Puppet Theatre — the first theatrical fairy-tale institution for young theatre-goers.

The "Bavka" Zakarpattia Academic Regional Puppet Theatre is located in Uzhhorod on Theatre Square, in a historic building where back in the 1920s the "Prosvita" Ruthenian Theatre operated. The puppet theatre's repertoire includes over 30 performances staged on the motifs of folk, Ukrainian and foreign fairy tales.

It is not only in regional cities that there is the opportunity to enjoy theatrical art. In district centres too one can appreciate the level of mastery and acting of the actors who have devoted themselves to the service of the theatre.
The spiritual life of the residents of Pavlohrad becomes richer thanks to a spiritual centre — the B. Ye. Zakhava Drama Theatre, which is housed in the building of the former Count's Theatre and bears the name of its fellow townsman Borys Zakhava. The monument was built by the enlightener and poet Golenishchev-Kutuzov in 1896. In that same year the future director of the Shchukin Moscow Theatre School, Borys Zakhava, was born in Pavlohrad. The company of the municipal theatre has staged more than a hundred plays by domestic and foreign authors. The buffet — an indispensable theatrical attribute — is decorated with posters from the repertoire of the Pavlohrad theatre.

In Drohobych the Lviv Regional Academic Music and Drama Theatre is named in honour of a renowned local, the first doctor of medicine in Central Europe, Yurii Drohobych. In the repertoire of one of the most touring theatres are works by domestic and foreign classics, as well as children's plays and folk works.

The Gyula Illyes Zakarpattia Regional Hungarian Drama Theatre is housed in one of the oldest buildings (end of the 17th century) of Berehove, the former "Oroszlan" ("Lion") hotel, where the famous Hungarian poet Sandor Petofi once stayed while passing through. Connoisseurs of theatrical art come to the district centre to catch a premiere in time, since the troupe tours Europe a great deal. Practically every year the company brings home honorary winners' cups from prestigious European festivals.

In Mukachevo the drama theatre is located practically in the heart of the city on the historic Cyril and Methodius Square. The theatre began its activity in 1947 and, in the opinion of critics, has today reached a European level.
