Henichesk. A town by the sea

I’ll remember May 2016 since I discovered a wonderful town of southern Ukraine, which was sunny and green, peaceful and hospitable. Let me share my impressions of the trip to Henichesk — one of best the seaside towns of Ukraine, open for tourists and vacationists.

To learn more about the town one should visit a museum. It is located in a building of early 20-th century and earlier belonged to the merchant Ostrovsky. Now it is the architectural monument of local importance.

10 000 units of museum fund are kept in 6 halls. They tell us of the first sarmats’ settlements, regional nature, military events, today’s heroes. You can observe 2 dioramas, bones of southern elephant (mamont), ancient amphoras, houseware. Works of Kupriyanov and other artists are presented here.

20 000 of people are engaged in fishing and its manufacturing, also work in service area.

Unfortunately, port has been working with a minimal load now.

Four schools and the boarding school are as alma mater for Henichesk youth. It means there are future and plans for town management to work at.

A great deal of work and plans emerged before new direction. To compare with other regions, Henichesk and Arabat arrow, like stepson and stepdaughter, were on secondary positions in resort and tourism development. In the meantime natural resources, climate, location at the central part of the country constitute the basic points for development of this fertile place. It will no doubt become one of the most popular resorts. And this is the very place to come on vacation or holidays from nearby industrial regions.

Henichesk looks like many seaside southern towns.

These stairs are also called like Potemkinskaya in Odessa. I didn’t manage to count them. May be you, reader, tell us?

I saw similar arches in Kerch. Kalimbet’ arch has been saved since 1909.

Streets and old houses remind Taganrog.

Despite some similarities with other towns, Henichesk appeared to be more cordial, conceivable and native due to all the people I met, who accompanied me and advised.

Temple of Blessed Virgin Mary is the only retained religious construction of the town. It is built in 1907 and belong to Ukrainian Orthodox Church. It was closed at atheistic times and used as warehouse and gym. Henichesk master in wood carving, Anatoliy Chernonog, has created iconostasis. Father John told me about it.

One can enjoy a splendid view on the sea from observation decks above the temple. With great unwilling I left them with our guide Oksana, who led us to the next curious places.

Military memorial of World War II is not forsaken and is being duly treated.

It’s seen that inhabitants know and take care of town’s history. And much is carrying out for its development. Recently opened Alley of fairy tales became a lovely place to rest for people, both little and adults.

Those who are in love can find their own nook.

Sculptures of fairy and cartoon heroes invite to rest and have a snack in inexpensive cafes.

Everyone tasted good pizza, which was cooked by original recipe and gained high mark. The owners of this teahouse also got gratitude.

Even trash cans are made with respect to holiday-makers.

Quite unusual sundial is being prepared for opening. 300 bright days allow the Festival of the Sun to plan to be held. Other folk festivals and events are performed. The Day of town is celebrated at the end of September, when gardens and vineyards abound of fruits and satisfy with flavor of a young wine.

There is some lack without fountain. The beautiful one adorns the square.

Street clocks show right time, and this specifies much.

Henichesk will have the own seafront of 550 m width soon, and this is important and logical. Former authorities had scarcely paid attention to this matter. At last the new mayor A.V. Tulupov got around to it. The coast wall, which was built in 1968, was strengthened. They brought reinforced concrete blocks, canalized a power cable for illumination. The selling points, which had been scattered around, are relocated now, and there’s going to be a comfortable beach instead.

The new town authority will surely succeed. It must have, and citizens believe in it and support undertakings of mayor and his team. Their endeavor to work for future and first essential steps in this direction are obvious. The enormous amount of works is planned to reform infrastructure. The list of activities is not decreasing. But Tulupov A.V. makes impression as a very responsible, intelligent, potent and honest man. Here is the mayor of the Ukrainian town of a new generation!
