Lviv. The Home for Rescued Animals. Protecting the weak is the work of the strong

This is not a zoo, not a menagerie, not a safari park and not a zoological garden. Here, animals and birds rescued in various circumstances have found their refuge.

The Home for Rescued Animals is located in Lviv on the grounds of the "Znesinnia" landscape nature park, at the foot of Lion Mountain.

 

Neglected garage units that had belonged to the Lviv municipal enterprise "Zelenyi Lviv" (Green Lviv) were converted into enclosures and settled by foxes, ferrets, geese, storks, raccoons, dogs, a little goat, a deer, a donkey, falcons, pigeons and many other unfortunate creatures.

 

Every resident has its own sad story. Some were hurt by a hunter's gun, some ended up with careless owners, some were about to be sent for a barbecue, and some were picked up on the street or in a park. A few cases are striking in the indifferent and inhuman way people treat the creatures of the animal world. The fawn Bambi was caught in the forest and given to a child as a birthday present. Soon the toy grew boring and they hurried to get rid of little Bambi. The foxes were bought out of establishments where dogs are trained for hunting. The warm, fine fur of the silver foxes would have been used to sew fur coats. A raccoon was kept in a restaurant and fed fried and other unsuitable food. The horse Orlyk served out his working years and, on retirement, was no longer needed by the farm.

The owls arrived at the shelter as youngsters, but with injuries and wounds. Many of the little animals have become old-timers of the shelter, because they can no longer adapt to the natural environment.

 

Every day the benefactors take in two or three poor souls who need attention and help. Since the first day of the enemy invasion of Ukraine, domestic and wild animals have been suffering from the shelling. The reception centre holds representatives of the fauna who were rescued in the combat zone. The zoos of Kharkiv, Mykolaiv and Zaporizhzhia were forced to move their inhabitants to Western Ukraine.

The workers of the rescue centre and the volunteers evacuate, give aid and find a roof for these long-suffering four-legged and feathered friends. Many animals were successfully taken abroad. Those who found a home in Lviv need help and support. There is a constant need for food, materials for arranging their quarters, and medicines.

 

You must not feed the shelter's residents yourself. It is better to leave vegetables, fruit, nuts and other treats on the table by the entrance, or to give financial help.

Also, you should not come to this animal-protection facility in clothes of natural fur, nor tease the animals or photograph them with a flash.

 

Bear in mind that the animals have been through stress and not all of them are able to make friendly contact yet. But those who have experience of walking tailed companions can take the dogs out for a stroll.
