When we speak of Lviv, we recall that it is a wonderful city with a centuries-old history. It is called a city of love, of dreams, of students, of coffee, of sounds... the list could go on for a long time. I will add that it is also a very green city with beautiful parks and gardens. I was lucky enough to visit the Botanical Garden of the Ivan Franko Lviv University, and I would like to share my impressions of this event.
The garden is a teaching laboratory of the university and performs a research function, so it is not always open to the public. You can book a tour in advance or, if you are lucky, come on an Open Day. Such events are held from time to time, when the plants bloom en masse and delight the eye.
How wonderful the 22nd of May was, when the doors of the garden were open to admirers of blossoming treasures!
Undoubtedly, at any time you can admire all the garden's inhabitants here. But to behold the flowering of the rhododendrons, the tree peonies, the lilac and the tulip tree — that is a special pleasure!
The tree peonies surprised me with the tenderness of their petals' colouring.
The period of the irises' mass flowering was already over, but some of the perennials still managed to display their riot of colour.
The garden has a complex terrain, but this lets you see the plantings from its various points.
Trellises have been set up for the climbing and liana plants.
On ordinary days a dog guards the steep descent to the lake. On this day he was friendly and begged a little.
In the centre of the garden there is a greenhouse with a giant cactus and enormous palms inside.
I can imagine how the hearts of cactus and succulent collectors skip a beat at the sight of the countless pots with these plants.
And the palm lovers examined the overseas wonders planted in tubs.
It is incredible how many different exotic plants grow in the garden! I used to think this was only possible in the south. The specialists of the Lviv Botanical Garden have learned to adapt these demanding dwellers of the tropics.
In the round pool, aquatic plants are grown and studied in separate sectors.
I also looked into the hothouse; there, seedlings of annuals had already been prepared for planting out into the open ground.
The experimental plots take up a lot of space on the grounds. They are divided into beds, sometimes quite tiny, but everywhere there are labels with the names of the plantings.
I spoke with the workers of this little corner of paradise. You could see that they were glad to see delighted visitors. But they also have to worry about the plants on such a busy day. I, too, noticed how, for the sake of a beautiful shot, people pushed apart the branches of the bushes, touched the delicate flowers, and trampled on the beds. That is simply unacceptable! All the same, it is good that the garden is not open all the time.
It was very pleasant for me to see some plant species that feel comfortable in my own garden too. In all, I counted about 15 kinds. These are honeysuckle, hostas, barberry, jasmine, thujas, boxwood, irises and other favourites of mine.
For an even more elevated mood, young musicians performed folk pieces and medleys by foreign composers. The listeners rested on the lawn, taking manifold pleasure in it.
I thank everyone who works here and puts their strength and soul into creating such beauty. I thank the Lvivite who told me about this wonderful place. Now, for me, the Botanical Garden of Lviv University is botanical garden No. 1. I hope to visit here again and see other plants in bloom, and I will share my impressions with you.
