Did you know the Lviv tram is 130 years old

Lviv is impossible to imagine without the tram, and over its 130 years the city's rail transport has become one of the city's calling cards.

In Lviv in 2024, about 180 thousand passengers use electric transport every day on eight tram and ten trolleybus routes.

The first electric tram line in Lviv was built on 1 May 1894 for the Regional Exhibition held in Stryiskyi Park. It was the second electric-powered tram in Ukraine and the fourth in Austria-Hungary. The length of the track was 8.3 km.

Since 2014, the city has held tram parades with an exhibition of vintage trams. For residents and guests of the city, tours are run in a retro car along the route of the first tram.

New Lviv trams can carry up to 160 passengers at a time.

The tram has its advantages amid complex urban traffic – cars wait while it clangs its way past. From the tram depot on Horodotska Street, about 80 trams set out on their routes every day.
