Lviv. Botanical Garden of the Forestry University and Museum of Wood. An educational institution and a green oasis

Lviv is considered the richest regional centre for the number and variety of its parks and gardens, each with its own distinct aesthetic. The Botanical Garden of the Lviv Forestry University is also a large green oasis and a charming adornment of the architectural ensemble of Ukraine's cultural capital.

A treasury of amazing trees and shrubs is located at 103 Generala Chuprynky Street, alongside the buildings of the educational institution.

The main building is the former gymnasium and boarding house of the Ukrainian Pedagogical Society, built in 1906–1908 with elements of Ukrainian Art Nouveau to the design, and largely at the expense, of the architect Ivan Levynsky.

The building was once donated by Andrey Sheptytsky to the Ruthenian Pedagogical Society. The Metropolitan contributed greatly to the development of forestry education and science in Ukraine. On the university facade there is a memorial bas-relief plaque with a quotation from Andrey Sheptytsky: «…so that the useful work of Ukrainian foresters, begun with God's blessing, may be carried on further».

A walk through the botanical garden fills the heart with harmony: the rustling trees flutter their leaves, the birds chatter, and every corner is full of life and beauty.

This space for the study of flora was created in 1991 and occupies a plot of 26 hectares.

To the gentle whisper of the leaves, you can study the specimens of the collection on your own from the labels and admire the exotic species.

In spring, visitors' attention is drawn to the colourful flower bed by the entrance to the academic building.

From hazardous and dead-standing trees, master carvers have created sculptural groups.

On the grounds of the botanical garden, since 1991 there has operated one of only two wood museums in the world, where you can learn about the uses of wood and which products and liquids are obtained from it. The stands display wooden samples, some of them over 100 years old. A rare exhibit is preserved here — a fragment of Lviv's wooden water pipeline. The museum hall is arranged in the form of a student lecture room.
