M. P. Starytsky wrote this musical comedy in 4 acts in 1872, drawing on the picturesque theme and plot of M. V. Gogol's work "The Night Before Christmas". The music for the festive tale was composed by M. V. Lysenko. The production, in which mysticism and humour, fairy tale and reality are interwoven, has met with unfailing success for 150 years, and without it the winter holidays are already impossible to imagine. The play is imbued with a strong Ukrainian spirit and firm traditions.
Talented actors vividly reveal the images of the beloved heroes — the beautiful Oksana, the brave Vakula, the deft Solokha, the self-assured Chub, the Zaporozhian Cossack Patsiuk, the cunning Devil, and the other lifelike characters familiar from childhood. Over Gogol's farmstead even the stars shine in a special way and give hope for the fulfilment of a cherished dream. But the most important thing is that in the play good triumphs over evil, and the feeling of love helps to overcome hardships and obstacles.
