Slavkurort. Awaiting the Revival of an Old Resort

Sloviansk resort is one of the oldest mud-cure resorts in Ukraine. Sloviansk has been known for its mineral waters and therapeutic muds since 1827. At the beginning of the 20th century, Sloviansk mud was recognised as the best in Europe and won the Grand Prix at an international exhibition. In Soviet times this resort of national importance was the most financially prosperous trade-union health resort.

Every year around 20 thousand holidaymakers took the cure here for diseases of the musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, and nervous systems — practically the whole body.

In 2010 disagreements between the city and the resort leadership over the rational use of the muds and other natural resources did nothing to help the health resort develop. From 2014 the situation worsened and told badly on Slavkurort's infrastructure. The balneo-physiotherapy hydrotherapy clinic was housed in the building of the former balneological institute. The clinic was built in 1852 and restored in the first years after the Hitlerite occupation. For several years now the treatment facility has stood abandoned and is turning into a derelict.

One of the resort's four sanatoriums — "Donbas" — had its own balneological clinic with 84 places and a mud store. The buildings with their projecting bays were erected in 1976 by the design organisation "Soiuzkurort".

The pump room occupied a chapel rebuilt in 2000, consecrated in 1903 in honour of the healer Saint Panteleimon. At the pump room they drew salty artesian water for treating gastrointestinal diseases.

The health resort's main natural riches are the salt lakes Slipne and Rapne and the forest-park massif.

The territory, with a total area of more than 431 hectares, holds the status of a regional landscape park. 114 species of trees and shrubs make up the resort's green collection.

For the terrainkur, a promenade, alleys, and viewing platforms overlooking the lake were laid out.

For enjoying the purest air and admiring the coniferous plantings and the flower beds, original benches were installed.

For now the park is neglected, the alleys are overgrown with wild growth, and the sculptures and fountains are crumbling.

In various years, well-known figures restored their health at the resort: Afanasy Fet, Nikolai Ostrovsky; the 13-year-old Mstislav Rostropovich performed here with an orchestra.

Maxim Gorky recovered his health at foreign resorts at the expense of the RCP(b) treasury, but in the park the stormy petrel of the revolution is immortalised in concrete in memory of his labour in 1891 at Sloviansk station.

A. P. Chekhov stopped in Sloviansk in 1887 and described the town as "a godforsaken, disordered place". The classic was honoured with a gilded bust beside the "Sloviansky" sanatorium.

The resort had a modern treatment-and-prevention base and medical equipment; the effectiveness of its treatment, the achievements and professionalism of its doctors were known beyond Ukraine's borders.

At the "Donbas" sanatorium, miners and workers of other dangerous trades rested and restored their health, and children affected by the Chornobyl NPP accident underwent rehabilitation.

The "Yuvileinyi" health centre may be considered multi-profile, since here they helped people rid themselves of many grave ailments. The sanatorium was built in 1979 by the collective of the Novokramatorsk Machine-Building Plant and, besides its medical base, had sports grounds, a swimming pool, a concert hall, and much more for the holidaymakers' active leisure. The "Poltava" sanatorium was built to the same design and is one of the best sanatoriums in Myrhorod.

People who need treatment at Slavkurort await its revival and hope that the health resort will get back to normal operation.

But until the quarrels die down, the resort should not expect its former prosperity.

How to get there? From the Sloviansk railway station or the bus station, a marshrutka and trolleybus No. 8 run to Slavkurort. At the Slovianskyi Kurort railway station stop the suburban trains Kostiantynivka-Kharkiv, Kostiantynivka-Izium, Sviatohirsk-Blyzniuky, Fenolna-Chervonyi Lyman and the passenger train Kostiantynivka-Ivano-Frankivsk. Along the eastern side of Slavkurort runs the M-03 (E 40) motorway Kyiv-Kharkiv-Dovzhanskyi.
